The majority of the episode revolves around this kooky conceit. Said funeral was also peak- New Girl , using a quirky plot device to delve into the deeper emotional depths of a key character. We have nothing further to add. Their romantic coupling is one of the worst on TV. That made Jess into a cutesy caricature of a woman whose brash optimism even in the face of heartbreak made her insufferably twee and that turned Nick into an unlovable immature loser who continued to live with his ex-girlfriend for some stupid reason that is completely beyond us.
Deschanel, who was perfect for the role of Jessica Day, was asked about her comedy chops, as the interviewer wondered if it came easy to her or if she had to work at it. She said she considered herself a comedic actress and shed some light on how she tapped into the comedy of New Girl.

Their beefs tend to be feminist ones. Critics in this camp often point to the film Days of Summer. Unfortunately, this sort of narrative arc—which, in better hands and with a much better script, might provide some genuine character development—mostly just delivers the message that, so long as weirdness prevails, all is right with the world.
Jess spins her eccentric wheels constantly, but … so what? She is a two-dimensional illusion of a three-dimensional person. In interviews, she seems programmed to talk and behave exclusively as an adorable oddball.
