It brings the RPM of the engine down at a given road speed to facilitate better speed and fuel efficiency. It also helps your car to provide the best performance in higher speed cruising. Overdrive helps when you drive at more than 50mph. What happens when your overdrive goes out? Turning overdrive off in a 5-speed automatic will cause the car to shift from 5 to 4. This will decrease economy, but will have no immediate effect.
The OD button is left there, because some people doing something like towing, want to remain in a lower gear, to manage the stresses on the engine and things like that. What causes the overdrive to go out? The computer will keep the vehicle from going into overdrive and turn on the traction light if it detects a problem in the system. This can be caused by a steering sensor or a wheel speed sensor. Where is the o d off button? Your Over Drive has been turned off. By pressing the button on or near the shifter, you disabled Overdrive OD.
This keep the vehicle from shifting into a higher gear when you don't need it while driving around town at speeds less than 40MPH. How do I know if my overdrive is on? If you want to know if it is on or off, there is an easy way.
While driving on the highway, change the overdrive selector and see what happens. If engine speed RPM goes up, then overdrive is now off. If engine speed goes down, then overdrive is now on. When should I turn off overdrive? Well, the main time you will want overdrive off is if you find that you are having trouble pulling a load. You can tell if you are having trouble because the RPMs will get high and the engine will audible have a strain on it. If that is the, you should turn overdrive off, so that the engine can have more power.
When should I use od button? When the OD gear light is off, your overdrive gear is not engaged. You can put the OD light off by pushing a button on your gear shifter labeled OD.
The OD off indicates that your car will not shift into overdrive which is your top gear. It is useful to turn your overdrive off if you need to use engine braking or driving up a hilly area. If overdrive is turned off, the transmission can be fixed to a lower gear, the response to the accelerator becomes better, and the engine brake becomes more effective.
Neutral gear is the safest position in which to tow your vehicle. The neutral position disengages the engine, which can minimize the risk of damage in short-distance towing.
Also, keep an eye on the transmission Temps if you can. Realistically, regardless of the number of gears as long as you keep the engine in the right rpm range for that gear. OD off prevents the transmission from shifting to the highest gear, which is overdrive.

Other than this issue, the Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer edition 4-wheel drive is a dream to drive. So pleasant for long trips, performance on 4-lanes is off the charts -- so we want to fix this and keep it.

If you only have one car, better to leave it parked until when taking it to reputable mechanic and rent a car if need be; better than possibly ruining your transmission.
