Besides test items, Binet also needed an external criterion of validity, which he found in age. Binet, therefore, identified the mean age at which children, on average, were capable of solving each item, and categorized items accordingly. Subsequently, a more accurate approach was proposed by William Stern, who suggested that instead of subtracting real age from the age estimated from test performance, the latter termed 'mental age' should be divided by the former. It means that this age group is still firmly within the superior intelligence rank or above the average group together with their much younger counterparts aged 65 to 69 years old.
It is really not a surprise that all of the age groups that underwent the test always achieve an average score. That is why it is called average.
